Program Support - Botanical Cyanotype Workshop (Possum CreeK)

Enjoy the outdoors and help others discover the beauty all around. Volunteers interested in art, photography, textiles,  gardening/botany, and history may find this workshop interesting and will be best suited for this opportunity.  Program assistant volunteers will be assisting with set up, registration, and making sure each participant gets the individualized attention needed, and assisting the staff lead in creating a relaxing opportunity for art discovery.  

Impact

Volunteers help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for all interested in learning.  They enable more individualized support for first-time learners and create a better skill-building environment. Volunteers help people make a stronger connection to nature by making it easy to experience the outdoors in fun activities. 

Tasks

  • Assist the staff lead with preparing supplies and set up for programs.
  • Volunteers will welcome participants and get them signed in.
  • Assist in distributing materials and reviewing program procedures.
  • Volunteers will help participants with questions and troubleshoot minor problems.
  • Assist participants in finding natural materials to use
  • Gather extra supplies from participants.
  • Assist with the tear down and clean up at the end of the program
  • Volunteers will also get to know other volunteers helping with program support.
  • If it is cloudy, volunteers will assist with program prep for the next cyanotype program.
    • This involves ironing fabric, cutting fabric, taping the perimeter of the fabric and sensitizing the fabric with the cyanotype fluid.

Eligibility: This opportunity is available to volunteers aged 16 and older, including both long-term and short-term volunteers. Learn more about our types of service here.  Volunteers with art, textile, or design knowledge are preferred, but all volunteers are welcome.

  • Youth volunteers ages 14-17 are not required to complete a background check. If you are a new youth volunteer contact volunteer.services@metroparks.org to have your background check waived.

Additional Notes

  • Environment & Physical Demands: This program takes place outdoors. Volunteers may participate in some bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting objects to 10 lbs or more.  Volunteers should be aware of any seasonal allergies. To learn more about Cyanotyping follow this link.
  • Parking & Meeting InstructionsClick here for a map of Possum Creek MetroPark. Meet at the education building.  Volunteers arrive an hour before the program begins to allow parking, meet with the staff, and assist with set-up. Staff leads will orient volunteers to the day's activities, where supplies are located,  and other important information.  There will be a short break for lunch, so please bring a lunch with you.
  • Dress: Volunteers should dress for the weather. Please wear your volunteer name badge and if you have one, your green or blue volunteer shirt.
