Following the completion of a prescribed burn in the fall of 2022 at Englewood, we would like to clear the woodies from these areas prior to the spring. Woody plants are plants that have hard stems (thus the term, "woody") and that have buds that survive above ground in winter. The best-known examples are trees and shrubs (bushes). Join the knowledgeable staff and other volunteers as we cut and remove a variety of woody vegetation from the prairies at Englewood MetroPark research plots.
Impact
Protecting open space and natural areas is a priority for Five Rivers MetroParks, which protects nearly 16,000 acres of land — 90 percent of it in its natural state. Natural areas in MetroParks are managed so that habitat for plants and wildlife takes precedence. Volunteers support a variety of impactful habitat restoration projects to keep these spaces clean, safe, and beautiful.
Tasks
Under the supervision of the assigned staff, volunteers will support and assist with the following:
-
cutting woody vegetation and dragging the brush that has been cut to a chipper that will be onsite. Staff will treat with herbicide and load the brush into the chipper.
