Join us at the Historic Steam Engine demonstration at 2nd Street Market, where you'll welcome visitors, support the demonstration, answer general questions, and help create a fun, memorable experience while bringing a piece of our region's agricultural heritage to life.

Impact

The Historic Steam Engine demonstration brings our region's agricultural heritage to life, giving visitors a unique opportunity to experience history in action. Through welcoming conversations and meaningful interactions, volunteers help create memorable experiences that connect our community with Five Rivers MetroParks and our shared history.

Tasks  

Under the supervision of the assigned staff, volunteers will support and assist with the following:

  • Welcome and engage with visitors at the Historic Steam Engine corn demonstration, creating a friendly and welcoming experience while answering general questions about the demonstration and Five Rivers MetroParks.
  • Distribute freshly steamed corn, assist with adding butter as requested, and help keep the serving line moving efficiently.
  • Help maintain a clean and organized area by directing visitors where to dispose of corn cobs and other waste, assisting with general event support as needed, and referring questions outside the scope of the volunteer role to staff.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to individuals, long-term volunteers, ages 18 and up.

Additional Notes:

  • Parking & Meeting Instructions: Park and meet the staff lead at the 2nd Street Market600 E. Second St., Dayton, OH, 45402. We will meet at the East side of the intersection of Webster and 2nd Street see map below.
  • Cancelation: If you need to cancel a shift last minute or are running late, please call Staff Lead Christopher Snyder at 812-569-1377.
  • Environment & Physical Demands: This project takes place outdoors. Volunteers should be aware of seasonal allergies (i.e., grass, pollen, bees, etc.), and can expect to participate in bending, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, and lifting objects of 15 lbs or more, etc. We will be working outside and near a very warm steam engine, so please bring water and anything that would help keep you cool.
  • Dress: Please wear your volunteer name badge and volunteer apparel. Dress for the weather, and if provided, dress in period-correct clothing (provided by Carriage Hill MetroPark).
