A time to come together to kick off the gardening season at Possum Creek MetroPark! Help us create Garden-to-Go kits!
Garden-to-Go kits are take-home kits that allow families to experience nature on their own time while learning new things, developing new skills, and improving access to nutritious fresh produce. These kits include information and growing instructions in English and Spanish, 12 different kinds of seeds, and 3 seedlings - a tomato plant, pepper plant, and a basil plant. The kits assembled with the help of our volunteers will be distributed to families and individuals in our region with a focus on those who live in designated food deserts or struggle with food insecurity. Our hope is that these kits increase food access, food choice, and provide tools for empowerment.
Impact
Horticulture at Five Rivers MetroParks creates, maintains, and preserves green space and habitats for pollinators and native plants, as well as educates visitors on sustainable gardening practices and local food production. Gardening volunteers support the Horticulture and Outdoor Connections staff in a variety of gardening tasks.
Tasks
Under the supervision of the Staff Lead, volunteers will assist with the following:
- These tasks require an attention to detail and organizational skills, keeping track of a variety of contents used for packing each kit.
- Work alongside staff to assemble garden to go kit bags.
- Each bag will be filled with seeds, instructions, and garden information.
- Once filled, bags need to be folded and sealed and packed for distribution.
