Textile and Fiber Arts are more than sewing, and this session is to introduce support volunteers to the rigid heddle loom. MetroParks is helping bring back fiber arts and textile skills in various programs and at the Historic Farm at Carriage Hill. This is a training opportunity for individuals who will be volunteering with our staff at programs, behind-the-scenes opportunities, and demonstrations at the farmhouse. Volunteers will learn to measure for and warp a rigid heddle loom, as well as weave and remove work. This knowledge will prepare the volunteer to assist in beginning rigid heddle weaving classes. The interpreter volunteers will be prepared for simple demonstrations at the historic farmhouse. This training will also start, and possibly satisfy the weaving assessment.
Volunteers help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for all interested in learning. They enable more individualized support for first-time learners and create a better skill-building environment.
Training opportunities allow volunteers to get to know the staff and other volunteers helping with program support, gain skills and confidence, and discover essentials in the program space – storage, where supplies can be found, water outlets, trash, etc.
Please remember to bring lunch and a refillable water bottle.
