Historic Interpreter volunteers are part of the program support team and bring the history of the Daniel Arnold Historic Farm to life by interpreting 19th-century farm life and demonstrating simple everyday farm tasks. This training opportunity is for volunteers interested in supporting the historic farm as a historic interpreter.
There is no more universal domestic tool in the world than a broom. Many people consider non-native broomcorn (Sorghum spp.) to be the best fiber for making the "head" or "sweep" of a broom. Brooms reflect the historical art forms of binding, weaving, and stitching. They have been essential domestic tools and were a staple in early American homes. Broom-making also served as a lucrative part-time business for farmers and laborers. At the Historic Farm, it is a wonderful demonstration and practical product for use at the farm.
This training will provide information on the history of brooms and broom-making. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn how to make a broom using traditional methods and an antique broom-making machine. This hands-on training is designed to enhance the skills of volunteers for Carriage Hill Historic Farm.
Volunteers who serve as Historic Interpreters attend trainings like this to be more well-rounded in all things Carriage Hill and enhance the visitor experience by aiding staff in creating a more dynamic offering of living history when the site is open during programs.
