Description

Our next level of training for Backcountry volunteers will be divided into various skill progressions to allow volunteers to build confidence and knowledge to better support our program staff and the participants.  We kicked off the season early in January and are continuing with this session focused on educating volunteers on backpacking.

Get some practical experience backpacking with this training. Volunteers will put on backpacks, add weight, and hike a section of the Twin Valley Trail together with the staff lead. Everyone will be having a picnic lunch using our backcountry stoves and getting experience filtering water. This is a great way to find out if you enjoy backpacking and would like to assist with Backpacking 2 or 3. This training is required to hike in/out with the group and camp overnight. No previous backpacking experience is necessary but must be comfortable carrying a weighted backpack on uneven terrain. Volunteers Must be 18 years or older to participate!

Programming volunteers work alongside staff to provide support at programs year-round that help participants master new skills, learn about the natural world, and appreciate the value of open spaces.  Our Outdoor Recreation team creates the learning environment to help individuals build skills to be successful in these activities. AND Volunteers are an important part of the Outdoor Recreation team!!

 AGENDA

Volunteers ready to engage and offer support for backpacking and camping programs should attend this session being held at the Twin Valley Welcome Center.  Many of the programs, as well as the equipment, are located at the Twin Valley Welcome Center.

Volunteers will learn:

  • Types of backpacks and how to measure and adjust them
  • How to fit their backpack with personal measurements
  • Use weights to simulate a full backpack, and be able to hike  while developing skills to help others on the trail.
  • How to use trekking poles, how to adjust them, and how they can assist on a hike
  • Basic wayfinding skills and map reading
  • About the stoves we use for backpacking vs camping and how to use them safely
  • How to cook a group meal with the backpacking stoves
  • Types of water filtration we use
  • How to filter water in the backcountry
  • About Leave No Trace principles and how we apply them to our programs

This session will engage volunteers indoors and on the trail, with lunch at a campsite, and activities to build knowledge and skills and strengthen our program support community.  Volunteers will be able to get a more hands-on experience of what is needed during each program, a chance to build or refresh some skills, and all the details to help a volunteer be confident and efficient in the role of program support and assisting with the various opportunities.

Additional Notes

This program will be both indoors and outdoors. Please dress in layers for warmth and prepare for whatever the weather may bring. The bulk of the training will be outdoors.
