Our next level of training for Backcountry volunteers will be divided into various skill progressions to allow volunteers to build confidence and knowledge to better support our program staff and the participants. We kicked off the season the season early in January, and we are continuing with this session focused on educating volunteers on backpacking and camping basics. Topics include: different backpacks, tents, sleep systems, food, water, and packing. An important component in our outdoor recreation programing is the Leave No Trace principles. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn more about these principles and how they impact our various backcountry programs. This training is required to assist with the campouts and overnight backpacking trips.
Programming volunteers work alongside staff to provide support at programs year-round that help participants master new skills, learn about the natural world, and appreciate the value of open spaces. Our Outdoor Recreation team creates the learning environment to help individuals build skills to be successful in these activities. AND Volunteers are an important part of the Outdoor Recreation team!!
