Description

Are you ready to take your volunteer experience to the next level and play a key role in managing invasive species across our parks? The highly anticipated Trained Serviceperson (TSP) training is here! This is your opportunity to join a specialized team of volunteers dedicated to preserving and restoring high-quality habitats throughout our parks system.

Invasive species threaten native biodiversity and the balance of our ecosystems. By becoming a TSP-certified volunteer, you’ll gain the skills and qualifications needed to safely and effectively apply herbicides using targeted tools. This limited-capacity training program is designed for volunteers committed to participating in weekday "cut and treat" opportunities alongside a staff member, tackling invasive species head-on across various MetroParks locations.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND? This training is designed for dedicated volunteers who:

  • Are passionate about habitat management and conservation.
  • Are available to support invasive species removal events during weekdays.
  • Are eager to join a team of volunteers ready to tackle invasives at parks throughout the region.

DO YOU QUALIFY? To be eligible to attend this training, volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, complete the Five Rivers MetroParks volunteer onboarding process (Volunteer Profile, Volunteer Handbook Signature, Emergency Contact), and pass the online background check.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
The TSP training will provide:

  • Pesticide Safety: Understanding health hazards, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe handling.
  • Pesticide Laws and Labels: A breakdown of regulations and how to interpret pesticide labels.
  • Application Techniques: Hands-on instruction with pre-filled applicator tools, such as wands, daubers, and the EZ-Ject lance.
  • Field Practice: After the classroom portion, you’ll hike into the woods to practice applying herbicide in a realistic setting.

WHAT TO EXPECT
This training includes both classroom and field components:

  • Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be prepared to squat, kneel, bend, carry 10-15 lbs., and work in various weather conditions.
  • Protective Gear: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Chemical-resistant gloves and safety glasses will be provided. (M-XL nitrile gloves will be available to layer over personal gloves for warmth.)
  • Weather-appropriate Attire: A hat with a stiff brim is recommended for navigating wooded areas.
