Vehicle Driver - Volunteer Training

Thank you for your interest in supporting volunteer opportunities that involve driving our MetroParks vehicles. There are a variety of opportunities for which the ability to drive our vehicles may be very helpful including Volunteer Courier, Shuttle Driver (utilizing our large vans or trams), Outreach Opportunities, or utilizing our Golf Carts and Gators at our special events. Driving vehicles is not required for most opportunities at MetroParks and is limited to those opportunities where driving a vehicle could be especially helpful or necessary.

ARE YOU ELIGIBLE? This opportunity is open to individual long-term volunteers ages 18 and up who have completed their volunteer onboarding qualifications (Volunteer Handbook Signature, Completed Volunteer Profile), an eligible background check, and have signed up for an opportunity where vehicle driving is necessary. New to MetroParks volunteering? Click here to learn more about how to become a volunteer!

GET STARTED!

Step 1: Read MetroParks Equipment and Vehicle Policy. You will sign off on this annually at your in-person training and check off.

Step 2: Upload Your Driver's License to your Get Connected account Files.

Log into Get Connected. Navigate to My Files in your Get Connected account and select "Add a File" to upload an image of your valid driver's license (front and back).
Tip! If you have a valid driver’s license already uploaded to your account, it will only need replaced once it has expired.

Driver's License Upload: Please title your driver's license upload with DL, name, and expiration date.
Example: DL_Penguin_Parker_Exp042224

*If you are unable to upload these items to your files in Get Connected, please email it to volunteer.services@metroparks.org.

Step 3: Complete a Motor Vehicle Screening. This screening is required annually for volunteer vehicle drivers and is separate from your regular volunteer background check. Click here to complete and submit a form authorizing us to run your motor vehicle screening.

Step 4: Complete the vehicle training that is applicable for the opportunity you want to support below - Road Vehicle (A), Electric Cart (B), or UTV (C).

A. Road Vehicle

Note: Standard size road vehicles such as cars, SUVs, trucks, and mini vans do not require a demonstration of safe driving skills with an annual volunteer check off. Vehicles larger than standard size including Ford Transits will require a demonstration of safe driving skills during an annual vehicle check off. Volunteers are not permitted to drive 1 ton trucks.

Step 5: Complete the In-Person Driver Training and Demonstration of Safe Driving Skills.

Once you have completed the steps above, you will be invited to attend an upcoming vehicle training. In-person trainings are offered seasonally as needed. Visit the Training and Events page to view upcoming dates and RSVP.

During the in-person training, the Staff Lead will walk you through the tasks and safe operation of the vehicle before giving you an opportunity to practice driving. Volunteers will demonstrate safe vehicle operation by the end of the training session in order to qualify to drive and sign off on the equipment and vehicle policy.

Once your vehicle qualifications are complete, you can begin signing up for opportunities!
