Historic House Demonstrator - Volunteer Training

Thank you for your interest in supporting the historic farm as a Historic House Demonstrator volunteer. These volunteers are Historic Interpreter volunteers who train, check off, and receive qualifications to serve as Historic House Demonstrators at the Daniel Arnold house located on Carriage Hill MetroPark's historic farm.  These volunteers often come to us with previous experience and interest in cooking, baking, cleaning, and basic sewing, as well as a passion for local history.

Historic House volunteer training consists of virtual training and in-person Shadow Experiences at the Carriage Hill Historic Farm where you will learn to safely demonstrate and interpret 19th-century homemaking.  Historic House Demonstrator volunteers must first complete the Historic Interpreter training before beginning their Historic House volunteer training. To view the Historic Interpreter training, click here. Returning Historic Historic House Demonstrator volunteers will be required to complete an annual check-off of skills.

DO YOU QUALIFY? This opportunity is open to long-term volunteers. To be eligible to support this opportunity, volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, complete the long-term volunteer onboarding qualifications, and receive an eligible background check. Click here to complete your long-term volunteer onboarding qualifications.

GET STARTED!

Once you have completed the Historic Interpreter Volunteer Training, follow these steps to qualify as a Historic House Demonstrator on the Daniel Arnold Historic Farm at Carriage Hill MetroPark:

Step 1: Complete the Historic House Volunteer Virtual Training:

  • Watch the brief video above.
  • Click the link to review the Historic House Manual.
  • Read the Food Safety Policy here.
  • Take the Historic House Demonstrator Quiz below:

Step 2: Complete an In-Person Historic House Demonstrator Volunteer Shadow Experience.

  • Once your quiz has been reviewed, a Volunteer Coordinator will be in touch with you to schedule a shadow experience.

SHADOW EXPERIENCES: This is an opportunity for you to observe and practice the skills necessary for a volunteer opportunity with a qualified volunteer and/or staff person. Volunteers may be asked to complete shadow experiences to gain practice and master essential skills. Volunteers may also request shadow experiences to gain more practice and master the skills needed to volunteer.

During this shadow experience, the Staff Lead or a qualified volunteer will walk you through the tasks of a Historic House Demonstrator volunteer and give you an opportunity to practice. You will need to successfully demonstrate the tasks of a Historic House Demonstrator volunteer in order to be checked off and qualify as a Historic House Demonstrator volunteer at the Daniel Arnold Farm.
