Love kids? Spend your time hanging out with the most adventurous youth in Dayton! The after-school program at Adventure Central promotes positive youth development, education, and leadership skills using an environmental foundation in a welcoming, safe, fun, and active setting. These kids are just bursting with energy and excitement! Depending on where the greatest need is for the day, the Program Assistant may spend time helping in the homework room, assisting in the kitchen during mealtimes, or outdoors monitoring play time and getting roped into all sorts of shenanigans from playing in the creek to jumping rope, to gaga ball!  Volunteers may also assist in the girl's or boy's group discussions and activities.

Volunteers will build trusting and positive relationships that strengthen values, build lasting life skills, and encourage an eagerness to explore life’s possibilities.

Volunteer: Bike To Work Day: Poster Distribution

Looking for a flexible opportunity you can support on your own time? Help us promote this year's Bike to Workday Pancake Breakfast! Poster distribution volunteers assist MetroParks in getting the word out about Bike to Work Day by visiting area businesses to hang and distribute event posters and palm cards before the event. 

Impact

Volunteers will be a part of the event team celebrating the positive impacts human-powered transportation can have on the body, the community, and the wellbeing of the planet. Your support makes events like this possible!

Tasks

Volunteers will be given a list of places to visit within a defined geographical area of Dayton to distribute posters and palm cards (if available).

Three distribution routes are offered on a first come, first serve basis. When distributing posters and palm cards, volunteers should introduce themselves as a volunteer with Five Rivers MetroParks and ask for permission to hang posters using tape or pushpins provided.Share information about the Bike to Work Day event, initiate conversations encouraging people to attend, and share your enthusiasm about the event and our MetroParks with others.Volunteers should take notes on which places they visited and which were willing to display a poster and/or distribute palm cards and report back to staff.Volunteers can deliver as their schedule allows but many businesses will be open during weekday business hours. Some may have evening or weekend hours. Volunteers must be able to make deliveries before May 1st, 2026.  Distribution can take place on the volunteer's schedule- no set days or times, as long as deliveries are made before May 1st

Volunteers unable to complete deliveries must contact the staff lead right away so that alternative delivery arrangements can be made.

Volunteers need to be able to pick up all supplies and instructions at the Five Rivers MetroParks Main Office, located at 409 E Monument Ave, Third Floor. The pickup window is Monday- Friday from 8 am-5 pm between 3/30/26 and 4/24/26. Volunteer: Astronomy Assistant: The Overfield School in Troy

Individuals who volunteer their time and talents help put excitement and perspective into the activities offered by our programming teams.   Astronomy Assistant volunteers will assist with the assembly and use of the education telescope, help children and their teachers be able to find points of interest in the sky and get them excited to explore the sky. This volunteer opportunity is for those familiar with astronomy and will assist with the astronomy activities and assist in training program support volunteers for their roles in activities.   

Impact

Volunteers enable us to accomplish so much more by lending a hand in various activities.  They may demonstrate proper use of specialized equipment (ie. telescope), share their skills and experience to increase additional volunteer participation, and introduce other volunteers and participants to exciting science and night sky exploration.

Volunteer Position: Programming

Individuals who volunteer their time and talents help put excitement and perspective into the activities offered by our programming teams.   Astronomy Assistant volunteers will assist with the assembly and use of the education telescope, help children and their teachers be able to find points of interest in the sky and get them excited to explore the sky. This volunteer opportunity is for those familiar with astronomy and will assist with the astronomy activities and assist in training program support volunteers for their roles in activities.   

Impact

Volunteers enable us to accomplish so much more by lending a hand in various activities.  They may demonstrate proper use of specialized equipment (ie. telescope), share their skills and experience to increase additional volunteer participation, and introduce other volunteers and participants to exciting science and night sky exploration.

Catching a fish can be exciting and rewarding, a family activity many can enjoy. A fun skill-builder program in our fishing lineup uses program support volunteers to give more individualized attention to new learners!  "Practice makes perfect" is the saying, and learning to cast well increases your chances of catching the fish.  Our Outdoor Recreation team creates the learning environment to help individuals build skills to be successful in these activities.   You do not need to be an expert to be a program support for this opportunity, but it is always a plus. 

Impact

Volunteers help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for all interested in learning.  They enable more individualized support for first-time learners and create a better skill-building environment to test/hone casting skills. Volunteers help people make a stronger connection to nature by making it easy to experience the outdoors in fun activities.

Tasks

Assist in setting up the registration area, gear area (equipment and supplies), and casting area. Set up means you'll be lifting totes to 15 lbs. and carrying items over potentially uneven terrain for a short distance. You may also help set up a pop-up tent, depending on the location. Assist in putting together the targets. Place land targets with good spacing in the practice area. Greet and welcome participants. Assist the staff lead during the program to create a better learning environment for this unique fishing skill. Participants simply rotate from one area to the next. The volunteer would help manage time spent at each location to help with the flow of people. Help distribute program materials and supplies as needed. The Floating Event Ambassador roams the event greeting and welcoming park patrons, passing out event passports, and directing visitors to the booths to collect stamps.

Impact

Ambassador volunteers enhance the visitor experience by offering excellent customer service to park visitors and helping them build awareness of all the amenities that MetroParks offers to community members.

Can't decide which you love more -- enjoying the Summer Music Series at RiverScape or supporting the Five Rivers MetroParks?!  Good news, you don't have to choose!  Beer and Wine Sales volunteers, age 21 and over, can do both when they assist staff by pouring and serving beer and wine for event participants. Staff members take the guess work out of the equation and will be on site to check identification to approve or deny service. Volunteers may be stationed inside the RiverScape Cafe, the Rentals Office or outside under a 10' x 10' tent. 

Impact

Proceeds from alcohol sales will further our mission of protecting the region's natural heritage and providing outdoor experiences that inspire a personal connection with nature.

Volunteer: Astronomy Assistant - Great American Camp Out (Possum Creek)

 The Great American Camp Out has many scouts camping, enjoying nature, and, with the help of volunteers, discovering some of the interesting things in the sky. Volunteers should enjoy working with families, be excited about exploring the night sky, and can share their time and talents to support the programming team in putting excitement and perspective into the evening's activities.  Astronomy Assistant volunteers will assist with the assembly and use of the education telescope. The volunteer opportunity is for those familiar with astronomy and will assist with the astronomy activities and assist staff train program support volunteers for their roles in activities.

 The Great American Camp Out has many scouts camping, enjoying nature, and, with the help of volunteers, discovering some of the interesting things in the sky. Volunteers should enjoy working with families, be excited about exploring the night sky, and can share their time and talents to support the programming team in putting excitement and perspective into the evening's activities.  Astronomy Assistant volunteers will assist with the assembly and use of the education telescope. The volunteer opportunity is for those familiar with astronomy and will assist with the astronomy activities and assist staff train program support volunteers for their roles in activities.

Oversee staged equipment and assist participants in using the telescope.Assist participants in discovering constellations and night sky areas of interest.Assist in interpreting the night sky for guests by pointing out and identifying celestial objects and relaying fun facts and stories May assist with documenting the event through photos or video. Participates in debriefing and evaluating current activities. Encourage volunteerism, and help direct to the website for information

Eligibility 

This opportunity is open to individual Short-term and Long-Term volunteers, ages 18 and up, and have qualified as an Astronomy Assistant.

Parking & Meeting Instructions: Click here for a map of Possum Creek MetroPark.  Volunteers are scheduled to arrive before the start of the program. Staff leads will orient volunteers to the day's agenda and other important information. You will meet at the camping site.Environment & Physical Demands: This program takes place indoors and outdoors. Volunteers may participate in some bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting objects to 10 lbs or more. Volunteers may be standing or walking for the majority of their shift Dress: Volunteers should dress for the weather and wear their MetroParks name badge and volunteer apparel. Red light headlamps or flashlights are helpful.
