Help Preserve Our Parks' Stories! Do you love local history and want to make a lasting impact? Five Rivers MetroParks is seeking volunteers to help document the historical significance of our parks - especially those that joined our system from the City of Dayton in the 1990's. 

As a Historical Research volunteer, you'll collect and organize historical records, photos, and data researching park histories using archives, libraries and online resources, and catalog your findings into searchable formats for future interpretation. Best of all - you can work independently with regular check-ins with MetroParks staff, or at scheduled shifts with fellow volunteers and MetroParks staff.

This research helps us document the historical significance of Five Rivers MetroParks and adds richness to how we can interpret the parks to the public.  

Tasks Assists staff with collecting and organizing all forms of records and data comprehensively with the goal of preservation and or interpretation at a later time. Research may require in-person visits to facilities that house information, such as Wright State University Archives or local libraries. Utilizes modern tools such as computer-based software programs to research and document information. Looking to spend a Saturday morning doing something hands-on and meaningful? Join the team of knowledgeable staff and passionate volunteers at Cox Arboretum MetroPark. You’ll work alongside MetroParks staff and fellow volunteers on real, seasonal projects that help keep the gardens looking their best. Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just curious to try something new, Service Saturdays are a fun, flexible way to give back, learn as you go, and be part of the work happening at Cox Arboretum.

Volunteer will assist with a variety of seasonal garden maintenance projects, which might include weeding, planting, or mulching, depending on the weather and the conditions.

Are you ready to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty? Join us at Possum Creek MetroPark for a fun-filled volunteer opportunity in the Demonstration Garden! The Demonstration Gardens provide produce to those in need throughout Dayton and the Miami Valley. Our education staff needs your help in maintaining the gardens and flower beds at the farm. Together, we'll make the Possum Creek Demonstration Garden a beautiful and inspiring place for programming, school tours, and park patrons of all ages!

Garden bed prep, weeding, compost maintenance (turning, sifting, and application), garden path maintenance (cardboard and woodchip application), garden bed construction, transplanting, planting, and more.

Fly Fishing 1 introduces participants to the fundamentals of the sport, and your involvement is key to helping them progress confidently on the water. This program focuses on teaching essential techniques for fishing in currents, so previous experience with fly fishing or water safety is an asset. Our Outdoor Recreation team, including our volunteers, is dedicated to creating an encouraging, skill-building atmosphere where participants can thrive. As a program assistant volunteer, you'll work closely with staff during interactive sessions, guiding beginners and promoting a welcoming, safe environment. You don't need to be an expert fly fisher, but hands-on fishing experience is necessary for this rewarding opportunity.

Impact

Volunteers help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for all interested in learning.  They enable more individualized support for first-time learners and create a better skill-building environment to test/hone casting skills and safety in moving waters. Volunteers help people make a stronger connection to nature by making it easy to experience the outdoors in fun activities.

Task

Greet and welcome participants Assist in registration check-in. Set up means you'll be lifting totes to 15 lbs. and carrying items over potentially uneven terrain for a short distance. Assist in setting up gear for participants to fish - rods, fly boxes, nets, and vests.  Assist the staff lead during the program to create a better learning environment. Help distribute program materials and supplies as needed.  Assist participants around the river, and in the river, with various activities, as well as getting instructors' assistance when needed. Assist in helping with instructor-led exercises in safe wading. Assist the staff lead in monitoring safety. Assist with clean-up, tear-down of equipment after the program, and getting neatly stored in the Fishing Trailer.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to individual,  long-term, and short-term volunteers, ages 18 and up. This program is a 2nd level, and volunteers will need to be experienced with wading in waters and have fishing experience.

Volunteers may participate in some bending, kneeling, reaching, and lifting objects to 10 lbs or more.  This program is 2nd level, and volunteers will need to be experienced with wading in waters and have fishing experience. Volunteers may be walking on current, river cobble, climbing up and down river banks, and walking distances to the river. standing for periods during instruction. Dress: Volunteers should dress for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes, bring their waders, and wear their MetroParks name badge and apparel.  You want to wet-wade or wear waders. Please provide your waders if possible, as this will allow more options for the participants coming to the program. IF YOU NEED A PAIR, the staff lead NEEDS TO KNOW EARLY.

Join the Five Rivers MetroParks education team and support family programming throughout the year that connects visitors of all ages to the natural world through storytime,  history, and farm activities, and meaningful exploration of the connections between the two time periods! This opportunity will focus on a storytime followed by a related activity that follows the theme of the story.  Please help us share amazing stories with children, exciting them about discoveries they can find in nature, and encouraging them to get outside and explore.  Volunteers will support the unique games available for youth and families to try, and enjoy the simpler activities from the 1880s.

Carriage Hill Farm Chores

Program Support

Join Five Rivers MetroParks horticulture education team and support family programming throughout the year that connects visitors of all ages to the natural world through gardening and meaningful exploration of the outdoors! This program invites kids ages 2-6 to join us for wonder and fun as we explore different areas of the Children's Discovery Garden and how it helps us learn about the world around us. Each month, we focus on a different topic themed around the variety of habitats you can find in the Children's Garden.  Volunteers will help with activities such as exploring different habitats, searching for bugs, taking brief hikes, creating art using natural materials, and encouraging sensory exploration of different garden spaces. Program Support volunteers do not need to be experts in the activities, but for this opportunity, should have some gardening knowledge, be enthusiastic about finding discoveries in the garden, and enjoy working with children and families.

Adventure Central Program Assistant 2026

Do you enjoy creating things from garden harvested items?  Interested in herbal wellness?  Volunteers will help participants discover the healing power of plants while supporting a hands-on herbal wellness class at Possum Creek MetroPark! In this engaging program, participants will explore the traditional uses, history, and folklore of medicinal herbs that promote healthy skin. Program Support Volunteer help create a welcoming, interactive learning environment by assisting with program setup, preparing materials, supporting hands-on activities, and encouraging participants throughout the class. Whether you have experience with gardening, herbs, or simply enjoy helping others learn, your enthusiasm and friendly presence will make a meaningful difference.  You do not need to be an expert to be a program support for this opportunity, but gardening and plant knowledge are always a plus.

Shadow Experience: Historic Interpreter

All Program Support

Wegerzyn Gardens MetroParks actively promotes landscaping with native plants in balance with traditional garden selections to inspire visitors. Come volunteer alongside staff and volunteers as you help with this important conservation project!

Impact

Protecting open space and natural areas is a priority for Five Rivers MetroParks, which protects nearly 16,000 acres of land — 90 percent of it in its natural state. Conservation volunteers are a part of our regional conservation story by assisting in implementing a variety of natural area management plans. 

Tasks  

Under the supervision of the assigned staff, volunteers will support and assist with the following:

A recurring opportunity to join our conservation efforts at Wegerzyn. Tasks could include removing invasive species, implementing tree stakes & cages to protect young native trees, planting new trees and shrubs, or other conservation-related tasks.Eligibility  This opportunity is open to the following volunteers: Long-Term, Short-Term, Adults.  Learn more about our types of service here.

Join us as we introduce our wildlife animal ambassadors to youth and families at Dayton STEM. Wildlife Ambassador volunteers are needed to help handle and present the animals at the wildlife ambassador booth including the turtles, snakes, owl, and hawk.

In this shadow experience, staff will work with you to show you how to confidently handle and interpret the animals to the public.

Five Rivers MetroParks Wildlife Ambassador volunteers assist with animal care and animal programming, sharing our conservation message with community members of all ages at a variety of programs, events, and outreach opportunities year-round.

Tasks

Five Rivers MetroParks Wildlife Ambassador volunteers assist with animal care and animal programming, sharing our conservation message with community members of all ages at a variety of programs, events, and outreach opportunities year-round.

Tasks

Assist staff in set-up and clean-up of wildlife ambassador booth space.With the help of your staff lead you will:Welcome guests to the booth, introduce yourself and the wildlife ambassadorsProvide excellent customer service to the public when approached with questions. Review talking points regarding the wildlife ambassadors in the Wildlife Ambassador Manual.Follow all safety procedures and ensure the safety of all participants. Alert staff when and if any issues arise.

This is an opportunity for individual Long-Term volunteers who are qualified Wildlife Ambassador Animal Care volunteers.

Love kids? Spend your time hanging out with the most adventurous youth in Dayton! The after-school program at Adventure Central promotes positive youth development, education, and leadership skills using an environmental foundation in a welcoming, safe, fun, and active setting. These kids are just bursting with energy and excitement! Depending on where the greatest need is for the day, the Program Assistant may spend time helping in the homework room, assisting in the kitchen during mealtimes, or outdoors monitoring play time and getting roped into all sorts of shenanigans from playing in the creek to jumping rope, to gaga ball!  Volunteers may also assist in the girl's or boy's group discussions and activities.

Impact

Volunteers will build trusting and positive relationships that strengthen values, build lasting life skills, and encourage an eagerness to explore life’s possibilities.  

Tasks

Interact with the kids - play, joke, chat! Monitor play for safety and harmony Assist staff in set-up and clean-up of program materials and equipment Assist in food prep, serving meals, cleaning up and organizing the kitchen after mealtime Support staff or lead designated activities during the programAssist staff with discussions during boy's group or girl's group

This opportunity is open to individual Short-term and long-Term, and youth volunteers, ages 14 and up who have completed the Adventure Central Training.

 Program Support Opportunities

Do you enjoy the Hispanic Heritage Festival? Support the event and the frontline staff by showing appreciation to those who work behind the scenes to make it happen! Volunteers are needed to oversee the hospitality room that will supply lunch and dinner to Five Rivers MetroParks staff and volunteers.

Impact

Special Event volunteers serve a critical role in ensuring that each special event or large-scale program runs smoothly from set up to tear down. Hospitality Attendant Volunteers make sure that hard working staff have access to needed food and drinks to keep them going strong for the duration of the event they are working.  

Tasks

Greet staff and volunteers, in an indoor environment, as they arrive.  Refill snacks and water as needed. Help with waste disposal, including compost and recycling. Provide support for food service providers. Help set up lunch and/or dinner meals.Help keep the area neat and clean.

     Small Farm and Food Fest 

Our historic farm field trips introduce children and their teachers to Carriage Hill MetroPark and the unique experiences offered at the historic farm. These field trips allow youth to enjoy hands-on experiences at the farm, witness demonstrations of everyday farming tasks, and receive a personal introduction to farm life. Volunteers begin the visit at the visitor center, where they welcome the group and lead them to the historic farm. During the walk, volunteers share interesting tidbits about the notable features of MetroParks.

Impact
The interpretative purpose of the farm is to use the Arnold Family, who once lived at Carriage Hill Farm, as a guide to how a real conservative farm family is in real-time at a real place. Volunteers engage visitors with their enthusiasm for history and what they will experience at the historic farm. By providing a personalized welcome and support for the students and their teachers during their visit, volunteers help create a more memorable field trip experience.  

Tasks

Inform historic interpreters and farm staff know that the group has arrived.Welcome students, teachers, and chaperones to Carriage Hill at the visitor center.Introduce yourself and outline the agenda for the tour.Distribute the historic farm map and any additional materials.If a large group, ensure teachers have assigned groups.Lead the group to the historic farm while sharing some information about Carriage Hill. Review the historic field trip outline /script for talking points to share.Using the provided map to highlight areas of interest.Review the virtual tour to familiarize yourself with the Historic Farm.At the farm gate, generate excitement for the staff and volunteers they will meet, as well as the things they will learn about the people and their times, emphasizing that this was a working farm with a real family. Assist in timekeeping for the tour group.Provide excellent customer service to participants and visitors.

Shadow Experience: Historic Interpreter

Program Support

Our Outdoor Recreation team creates a learning environment that helps individuals enjoy the outdoors through fun and safe activities. The MetroParks Trails Challenge is a great way to explore the region's trails while staying active outdoors. Participants can complete the challenge on their own schedule and at their own pace, choosing the trails they prefer. Are you a volunteer who enjoys exploring MetroParks and a variety of trails?  Our recreation team, along with the support of volunteers, provides personalized attention during scheduled hikes, enhancing the experience for everyone involved. Volunteers help individuals seeking to enhance their physical and mental well-being while connecting with nature and embracing an active outdoor lifestyle. Join us as a program support volunteer to help connect participants with nature, embrace an active outdoor lifestyle, and meet others with similar interests. This opportunity will be at starting in Brookville by the Dull Woods Conservation Area and Golden Gate Park, and hiking the Wolf Creek Trail (2.1 miles).
