Tree Corps

Expired

Description

Do you like getting your hands dirty, expanding on your seed identification skills, and supporting reforestation efforts? Register to volunteer at Tree Corps! The Tree Corps volunteer opportunity engages volunteers in growing plants critical for maintaining your MetroParks, from seed to seedling. Volunteers conduct Tree Corps at the Barbara Cox Center for Sustainable Horticulture at Cox Arboretum MetroPark.

Impact

Healthy forests are critical to a healthy environment. However, Ohio’s tree population has declined due to climate change, invasive species such as the emerald ash borer, and aggressive honeysuckle growth. Our Volunteers help protect the Dayton region’s natural heritage and preserve our forests by volunteering for Five Rivers MetroParks’ reforestation efforts at Tree Corps.

Tasks

  • Volunteer support is needed to clean, sort, and check the viability of a variety of native tree and shrub seeds. Volunteers will help to break the dormancy of the seeds through a process of stratification that mimics the natural conditions seeds would experience in the wild. They will work in the greenhouse to plant and germinate seeds. They will care for small seedlings through up potting until they are big enough to plant throughout MetroParks.
