Volunteer: SHADOW Experience: CHRC - Barn Aide

**This opportunity is open for volunteers in training to be qualified Barn Aides at the Carriage Hill Riding Center. These volunteers have completed the virtual volunteer training and in the in-person Barn Aide training. Now, they will shadow qualified volunteers and Carriage Hill Riding Center staff to practice the skills needed to become a qualified Barn Aide volunteer. **

Barn Aide volunteers are critical to providing daily care for the horses and the equestrian facility in which these beloved animals live, work, and play. Daily tasks include cleaning stalls, turning horses out to pasture, and providing them with fresh food and water. You'll work alongside qualified volunteers at staff to learn how to do each of these tasks until you are able to check off begin completing these tasks more independently during scheduled Barn Aide shifts and are even able to help train others. 

All new Riding Center volunteers begin as Barn Aides but can complete additional training to support a variety of programming opportunities at the Carriage Hill Riding Center.

Impact

Volunteers complete essential operational tasks and hands-on daily care alongside qualified volunteers and staff during these scheduled shadow experiences to ensure the good health and well-being of our horses allowing the Riding Center facility to function on a daily basis.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to the following volunteers:  Youth, and Long-Term. Short-term who have completed the required prerequisite training and are able to make an ongoing commitment to service at the Carriage Hill Riding Center. Volunteer: Herbal Harvest at Possum Creek

Ready to turn your love of plants into something ...magical? Join us in the Possum Creek MetroPark Demonstration Garden for our Herbal Harvest! You’ll help gather fresh herbs that will be used in upcoming herbal wellness programs and even in creative cyanotype (a sun-printing art process) projects. Each harvest is a little different — depending on the season and the plants that are ready, you might find yourself clipping fragrant mint, bundling lavender, or labeling dried thyme for future use. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just curious about herbs, our team will guide you through plant identification and harvesting techniques. Together, we’ll create something beautiful, useful, and inspiring for our community.

Impact

Horticulture at Five Rivers MetroParks creates, maintains, and preserves green space and habitats for pollinators and native plants, as well as educates visitors on sustainable gardening practices and local food production.  Gardening volunteers support the Horticulture and Outdoor Connections staff in a variety of gardening tasks. 

Tasks  

Under the supervision of the Staff Lead, volunteers will support and assist with the following:

harvesting, drying, storing, and labeling herbs (these tasks may vary depending on the immediate needs of the day). You’ll help gather fresh herbs that will be used in upcoming herbal wellness programs and even in creative cyanotype (a sun-printing art process) projects. Each harvest is a little different — depending on the season and the plants that are ready, you might find yourself clipping fragrant mint, bundling lavender, or labeling dried thyme for future use. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just curious about herbs, our team will guide you through plant identification and harvesting techniques. Together, we’ll create something beautiful, useful, and inspiring for our community.

Impact

Horticulture at Five Rivers MetroParks creates, maintains, and preserves green space and habitats for pollinators and native plants, as well as educates visitors on sustainable gardening practices and local food production.  Gardening volunteers support the Horticulture and Outdoor Connections staff in a variety of gardening tasks.

Share your gardening and park passion and introduce visitors to Cox Arboretum MetroPark!  Garden Guides have an enthusiasm for plants and MetroParks which is infectious and gets visitors excited about all the things they are seeing in the park.  Connecting and educating visitors to a diverse landscape of plants through a tour of our gardens is what a Garden Guide does. You do not need to know the name of every plant, but a "what's in bloom" highlight will be shared at the beginning of each tour.  May through September, Garden Tour Guides support our education team in providing this unique experience to visitors mainly at Cox Arboretum. 

Impact 

Program Support volunteers help build access, comfort, and safety for all interested in learning about the natural world.  Volunteers provide support for first-time learners and help participants build subject-specific skills.   Volunteers help people make a stronger connection to nature by making it accessible and easy to experience the outdoors in fun activities. Nature is a respite for many, and Garden Tour Guides support our education team in providing this service to park visitors. 

Tasks  Review the Cox Arboretum Garden Tour Guide Handbook.  Greet and welcome participants as they arrive.

Volunteers enable us to accomplish so much more by lending a hand in simple activities, allowing demonstrators to take a break, or talking with the visitors about the activities while allowing the tasks to be completed.

Volunteers represent what living in the 1880s might have been like, and help visitors make a stronger connection to the history of Carriage Hill and experience life on an 1880s working farm. This opportunity will focus on historical farming, gardening, homesteading, and food preparation information.

Tasks

Greet and welcome participants. Interpret and provide historic information on Daniel A Arnold Historic Farm. Engage participants and families in the activities on the farm during this program. Interpret and support an assigned demonstration. Demonstrations are as follows:  Historic Holiday Foods: in the Winter Kitchen of the DA House - Interpreting to the public. Discussing traditional Christmas foods and providing resources on how to make them today. Holiday Crafts: in the Sitting Room of the DA House - Interpreting to the public. Performing a basic craft (Knitting or crocheting), that demonstrates making a gift in the 1880s. An additional evening activity will be making pomander balls.   Christmas Traditions: in the Parlor of the DA House - Interpreting to the public. Describing traditional Christmas decorations, trees, ornaments, and overall traditions.   Christmas Tree Decorations: in the Old Summer Kitchen of the DA House - Interpreting to the public about the use of the Summer Kitchen, the Arnolds, and performing a basic craft that can be given to the public. The daytime activity is stringing popcorn for decoration. Kettle Corn Demonstration: Outside of the DA House - Interpreting to the public and answering questions as needed. Volunteers will be using the old kettle to make popcorn and distribute it to the public.   Gingerbread Baking: Outside of the DA House in the outside oven - Interpreting to the public and answering questions as needed. Volunteers will work with staff during the daytime portion to make gingerbread and distribute it to the public.Fresh Holiday Greens: In the new Summer kitchen - Interpreting to the public and answering questions as needed. Volunteers will create small greens giveaways for visitors during the daytime event.  An additional evening activity will be roasting chestnuts and distributing them to the publicParlor Games: In the parlor of the DA House - Interpreting to the public and answering questions as needed. Volunteers enable the staff to offer a diverse and engaging experience to those who come to the park.  They also help all of the day's visitors build awareness of all the amenities that MetroParks offers to community members.

Tasks Welcome guests as they arrive at the event and thank them as they leave. Assist children and families with letters to Santa or holiday coloring. Assist with wayfinding and answer basic questions about the MetroParks and Carriage Hill MetroPark. Five Rivers MetroParks lakes, ponds, and rivers are rich in fish life. All members of the family, young and old, can find a place to fish for recreation, relaxation, or food. Our Outdoor Recreation team creates the learning environment to help individuals build skills to be successful in these activities.  Catching a fish on a fly you created is so rewarding, and a skill many want to learn.  Nimble fingers are a plus with this mini task, and as with all skills first learned, extra support in the class is essential.  You do not need to be an expert to be program support for this opportunity, but it is always a plus.  This is a 4 week class, and it is encouraged that volunteers sign up to help for the series.

Impact

Volunteers help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for all interested in learning.  They enable more individualized support for first-time learners in this valuable skill-building program.  They help people make a stronger connection to nature by making it easy to experience the outdoors in fun activities.

Assist the staff lead during the program to create a better learning environment for this unique fishing skill. Hand out program materials.
