Do you enjoy customer service and long drives? Experience the changing seasons as you drive a designated route through the parks delivering mail to park staff. Courier volunteers start at the MetroParks Main Office to gather mail, then drive a MetroParks vehicle between park offices delivering packages, mail, and other items.

Volunteers provide quality administrative support to MetroParks staff, which enhances the efficiency of our operations and allows staff to dedicate more time to driving our mission forward.

Tasks Provide excellent customer service.  Be courteous and helpful to the general public, volunteers, and staff. Sort and distribute packages, mail, and other items. Regularly lift 10-15 pounds and occasionally lift as much as 25 pounds. Practice safe driving habits at all times. Practice confidentiality regarding all MetroParks personnel and business matters. Refuel vehicle at pre-identified locations during each shift. Complete vehicle use forms each shift and report any vehicle malfunction or service needs to Staff Lead immediately. Maintain open communication with the Staff Lead at all times. Eligibility This opportunity is open to the following volunteers: Long Term ages 18 and up who have trained and qualified as Volunteer Couriers. Learn more about our types of service here.This opportunity is currently not open for new volunteers. Additional Notes Commitment: Due to the training time invested in this opportunity, we are asking volunteers to commit to 1 year of service as a regularly scheduled Volunteer Courier. Volunteers must maintain a Valid Ohio driver’s license, provide proof of insurance, and submit a driver’s screening. Volunteers must submit to a standard drug test in the event of an accident. Parking and Meeting Instructions: Volunteers can park their vehicles in the MetroParks Main office lot, as long as a MetroParks Volunteer Hangtag is displayed in the front windshield.  Check in with the Visitor Services staff at the Main Office front desk upon arrival. Dress: Volunteers must wear a volunteer nametag and a high-visibility vest. Volunteers must carry a mobile phone during their shift for use in the event of an emergency. Cancelation: Email the list of Courier Volunteers to arrange a shift swap or a substitute. Notify the staff lead and Volunteer Coordinator of a shift swap, substitution, or cancellation with as much advance notice as possible. If you must cancel a shift less than 48 hours before the shift start time, please unregister your shift from Get Connected, AND call the staff lead. Love kids? Spend your time hanging out with the most adventurous youth in Dayton! The after-school program at Adventure Central promotes positive youth development, education, and leadership skills using an environmental foundation in a welcoming, safe, fun, and active setting. These kids are just bursting with energy and excitement! Depending on where the greatest need is for the day, the Program Assistant may spend time helping in the homework room, assisting in the kitchen during mealtimes, or outdoors monitoring play time and getting roped into all sorts of shenanigans from playing in the creek to jumping rope, to gaga ball!  Volunteers may also assist in the girl's or boy's group discussions and activities.

Impact

Volunteers will build trusting and positive relationships that strengthen values, build lasting life skills, and encourage an eagerness to explore life’s possibilities.  

Tasks

Interact with the kids - play, joke, chat! Monitor play for safety and harmony Assist staff in set-up and clean-up of program materials and equipment Assist in food prep, serving meals, cleaning up and organizing the kitchen after mealtime Support staff or lead designated activities during the programAssist staff with discussions during boy's group or girl's group

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to individual Short-term and long-Term, and youth volunteers, ages 14 and up who have completed the Adventure Central Training.

Help set up and support the region's premier outdoor adventure festival – The Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience! Working with MetroParks staff, Exhibitor Support & Set Up volunteers assist with building the event by working directly with exhibitors to load in and set up their booths. These volunteers support other set-up duties as needed. 

Impact

Special Event volunteers are critical in ensuring that each special event or large-scale program runs smoothly from set-up to tear-down.  

Tasks Greet and welcome exhibitors as they arrive.Review the exhibitor area and general event layout to best assist exhibitor wayfinding. Ensure exhibitors are checked in on the provided sheet and give them their nametag and info packet. Answer any questions regarding the event, and direct any questions you are unsure how to answer to the staff. Assist with unloading and getting supplies to the exhibitor's assigned booth area. Utilize available hand carts, dollies, and other small hand equipment as needed.  Use safe lifting techniques, proper hand tools, and safety gear as appropriate and necessary. Volunteers will be provided with all needed equipment and safety gear on site.

Help create an unforgettable camping experience at the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience as a Camp Site Host Volunteer! A volunteer's warm welcome and helpful attitude will help make every camper's adventure start on the right foot! As one of the first people campers meet, you'll be the friendly face that welcomes guests, answers questions, and helps create a positive first impression. Stationed at the entrance to the event campground, you'll assist with greeting arriving campers, providing information, and helping ensure the camping area remains a safe, organized, and welcoming place throughout the event. If you enjoy meeting new people, providing great customer service, and helping others feel at home outdoors, this is a fun and rewarding way to be part of one of the region's premier outdoor events.

Impact

These volunteers are the first event contact and make the experience seamless, welcoming, and fun for those participating.  They create positive, high-energy, and outdoor enthusiasm at the start of the visitor experience. Volunteers will leave knowing they have promoted an active, healthy lifestyle in the region and have contributed to making Dayton “The Adventure Capital of the Midwest!”

Tasks

Welcome and Check-in campers. Volunteers will ensure campers understand the camping rules and regulations. Copies will be available for distribution. Volunteers will roam campgrounds to make sure everyone has registered and campfires are only in designated areas. Help start campfires in designated areas.  Distribute programs as needed. Direct campers and visitors to ways to start their experience at the event. Have a good understanding of the layout of The Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience, answer questions, and be able to direct the campers and visitors to activity areas, presentations, entertainment, demonstration times, and various locations. Make sure anyone knows there is an activity waiver form for those who want to try an activity and direct them to waiver stations.   Volunteers should take a few minutes towards the end of their shift to train their volunteer replacement.  Pass along all the tips and tricks you learned during your shift to the next shift volunteers.If there is not a replacement, please make contact with a MetroParks staff member or Volunteer Services. Help more people discover the joy of cycling at the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience! Five Rivers MetroParks is offering beginner-friendly Try Cycling and Try Mountain Biking experiences led by expert staff and supported by volunteers. These hands-on activities give participants the chance to build confidence, learn new skills, and explore a fun outdoor recreation they may never have tried before. As a volunteer, you'll help create a safe, welcoming, and encouraging environment while assisting participants and sharing how they can continue their outdoor adventures with Five Rivers MetroParks

Impact

Program Support volunteers are critical in ensuring we can provide high-quality, engaging programming like "try it" activities to the public. They help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for participants. They enable more individualized support for first-time participants and help create excitement and energy at outdoor recreation events.

Tasks

Greet and welcome participants to the event and to the Try Cycling area. Ensure all participants are wearing activity wristbands before participating (which indicates they have signed a release waiver). If they do not yet have a waiver, point out on an event map where the nearest waiver station is located. Watch this video to learn more about our activity waivers. Review and ensure activity participants follow the posted safety guidelines. Assist with line management, helmet fitting, and bike fitting – participants MUST wear helmets (including those on personal bikes). Watch this video on Helmet and Bike Fitting. Report any issues to the Event Staff or sponsoring supervisor. Answer any questions to the best of your ability, and direct participants to staff if unsure. Five Rivers MetroParks will offer a variety of "Try It" activities at the Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience, giving visitors the chance to discover new outdoor adventures. Volunteers will be working alongside Wright State University, and will be supported and supervised by Five Rivers MetroParks staff at the climbing wall. This "Try It" experience introduces participants to the basics of climbing in a fun, supportive environment while helping them build confidence and develop new skills. By assisting staff, offering encouragement, and helping the activity run smoothly, you'll help others take their first steps into the exciting world of climbing.

Help us wrap up the region's premier outdoor adventure festival – The Wagner Subaru Outdoor Experience!  Clean-up and tear-down are essential parts of a well-run event, and for park users to be able to enjoy a clean, safe park after an event. Teardown volunteer support and assist with deconstructing the event by tearing down various areas around the park. 

Impact

Special Event volunteers are critical in ensuring that each special event or large-scale program runs smoothly from set-up to tear-down.  

Tasks Help staff with tearing down tents, tables, chairs, banners, displays, etc. Help disassemble, organize, and collect equipment and gear distributed throughout the event site.   Load supplies and equipment onto trailers and vehicles.Use safe lifting techniques, proper hand tools, and safety gear as appropriate and necessary.
