Description

This opportunity is reserved for youth and families in the Conservation Leaders program.

A southern flying squirrel in Athens, County  (Jim McCormac)

Dr. Don Althoff, a professor of Wildlife Conservation at the University of Rio Grande, does research on Southern Flying Squirrels and has 16 different sites with monitoring boxes that get checked in the winter for flying squirrel presence and activity as part of his ongoing research. He takes volunteers along with him on these checks and was excited to allow the Conservation Leaders to attend. This opportunity offers Conservation Leaders the chance to gain research and field-based experiences, enriching their knowledge and skills, and ultimately making them more versatile and knowledgeable volunteers.

DO YOU QUALIFY? This training is reserved for long-term volunteers who are approved in the Conservation Leaders volunteer program.

Additional Notes:

  • Environment & Physical Demands: This project takes place outdoors. Volunteers will be hiking over uneven and sometimes steep terrain in areas where they may have to “walk through” some brambles (i.e. multiflora rose, blackberry, greenbriar, etc.).
  • Parking & Meeting Instructions: Please meet the Five Rivers MetroParks Main Office (409 E. Monument Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45402) where a staff person will have our MetroParks van ready to transport everyone to Athens County. Please note that parking at the Athens County site is limited, and carpooling in the van is required.
  • Dress: Volunteers should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, bring thick leather gloves if you have them, and bring a packed lunch with a prefilled water bottle.
  • Notes: This training is weather dependent. More information regarding meeting time will shared by the staff lead 24-48 hours before the scheduled training date, so please be actively checking your email for updates during this timeframe.
