Do you have some textile skills you are willing to share? Want to learn how to use a modern knitting machine? MetroParks is helping bring back fiber arts and textile skills in various programs and at the Historic Farm at Carriage Hill. Volunteers help build access, comfort, convenience, and safety into our programs for all interested in learning. They enable more individualized support for first-time learners and create a better skill-building environment.
This is a training opportunity for individuals who will be volunteering with our staff at programs, behind-the-scenes opportunities, and demonstrations at the farmhouse. Volunteers will learn the basics of operating a knitting machine, creating simple stitches for demonstrations, and learning a technique used in making socks.
Training opportunities allow volunteers to get to know the staff and other volunteers helping with program support, gain skills, and confidence, and discover essentials in the program space – storage, where supplies can be found, water outlets, trash, etc.
Volunteers will prepare for programs, and do other tasks to build their skills.
Basic skills are helpful for some tasks, and other skills will be strengthened. Please remember to bring lunch If staying all day and a refillable water bottle.
DO YOU QUALIFY? To be eligible to support this opportunity, volunteers must be 16 years of age or older, be interested in program support opportunities, complete the volunteer onboarding qualifications, and those over the age of 18 must receive an eligible background check.
