Before the first constellation appears and before someone peers through a telescope for the very first time, a volunteer is helping make that magical moment happen. New and current astronomy volunteers are invited to this hands-on training utilizing our Telescope Kit. If you've ever looked
up in wonder at the moon, planets, or a sky full of stars, this training is for you!
Our programming volunteers inspire curiosity, encourage exploration, and help people of all ages connect with nature. Our Astronomy team is a group of enthusiastic volunteers who help bring the night sky to life for schools, scout groups, homeschool families, and community programs.
ARE YOU ELIGIBLE? This opportunity is open to individual, long-term volunteers, ages 18 and up who have completed their volunteer onboarding qualifications (Volunteer Handbook Signature, Completed Volunteer Profile), and for those 18 and up, an eligible background check. WHAT TO EXPECT & WHAT YOU'LL REVIEW
During this hands-on training, you'll become familiar with our Astronomy Education Kit and learn how to confidently support educators and participants as they explore the universe.
What You'll Learn:
By the end of the evening, you'll be ready to help others discover the wonders above them by learning:
• What's included in the Astronomy Education Kit and how to transport it safely
• How to assemble and operate our Orion AstroView 6 Equatorial Mount Telescope
• Tips for locating the moon, planets, and other fascinating night sky objects
• How to identify several common constellations
• Answers to frequently asked astronomy questions
• Ways to assist teachers and group leaders during educational programs
• Resources to continue building your astronomy knowledge
• Fun, engaging techniques for inspiring curiosity about the night sky
About the Astronomy Education Kit: Our Education Kits are available free of charge to educators, homeschool families, scout leaders, and youth organizations serving students in grades K–12. Each kit includes hands-on activities, educational resources, and specialized equipment designed to make learning interactive and memorable.
You will explore the Astronomy kit featuring an Orion AstroView 6 Equatorial Mount Telescope, multiple eyepieces and filters, a moon map, laser pointer, and books on constellations, star mythology, and navigating the night sky.
An Evening Under the Stars will wrap up by taking the telescope outside (weather permitting) for some real stargazing! Put your new skills to use as we explore the night sky together. And because every great evening outdoors deserves a warm treat, hot chocolate and cookies will be provided!
Why is this training important?
One of the best parts about the kits? Groups can request a trained volunteer to accompany the kit—bringing both the equipment and the excitement of astronomy to their program.
This training includes both indoor instruction and outdoor observation:
Physical Requirements: Volunteers should be prepared to squat, kneel, bend, and be able to carry the telescope kit. This involves lifting approximately 40 pounds for short distances, along with occasional kneeling and bending. A cart is available to assist with transporting the equipment.
Dress: Please dress for the weather. Volunteers should wear their volunteer name badge and apparel.

Training begins at 8:30 PM at Cox Arboretum in the Wallace Library. Share your knowledge and experience in the Astronomy qualification, then RSVP to join us for this in-person training and practice session! Space is limited, and RSVP is required.
