Teriana Boddie: From Camper to Star Youth Volunteer
Teriana, or "Miss T", as she's known around Adventure Central, started off as just one of the AC summer camp kids back when
she was in elementary school, but lost touch with the program when it had to shut down during the pandemic. Now a student at Chaminade Julienne High School, Teriana learned she had to serve at least volunteer 25 hours at a local agency to complete her religion requirement. "I thought of Adventure Central right away. I knew I'd like to get back there," said Teriana.
Now, a regular volunteer at Adventure Central, Teriana spends her afternoons assisting kids with homework, playing outdoor games, and just getting to know them better by sharing a meal and conversation with them. When asked what her favorite part of volunteering is, she said "Just seeing the kids make my day and I enjoy connecting with them on different levels. We are always doing something fun and interesting such as building stick forts and taking walks to the Wesleyan playground."
Teriana has gained valuable skills from her volunteer experience as well. Being a self-proclaimed "shy person", volunteering at AC has helped bring her out of her shell. The staff has encouraged her in public speaking and leadership roles, and she's gained confidence in conversing with kids, peers, parents, and staff alike. In addition to the 25 service hour requirement, Chaminade Julienne students must also write a social justice research paper informed by their volunteer experiences. Teriana's time spent at Adventure Central has helped her understand the importance of nutrition, outdoor play and exercise, and quality after-school care for today's youth.
