Stay Safe & Cool While Volunteering This Summer

Summer is here in full force, and so is the heat! While sunshine-filled days are perfect for enjoying our beautiful parks, it's important to take care of yourself, especially when volunteering outdoors.
Whether you're weeding garden beds, monitoring bluebird boxes, or greeting guests at special events, here are a few ways to keep your cool during hot weather.

  • Hydration is Key - Drink water before you feel thirsty, and keep sipping throughout your shift. If you're volunteering in a location without easy access to water, bring a bottle or jug with you and take plenty of breaks in shady spots to rest and cool down.
  • Dress the Part - Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing made of breathable materials like cotton. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher, applied 30 minutes before going out) can go a long way in protecting you from the sun.
  • Eat Refreshingly - Cold foods like fruit, salads, and veggies aren't just delicious. They help keep your body cool and hydrated, too.
  • Know the Signs - Heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke are serious. Learn how to recognize the symptoms and what to do if you or someone near you starts feeling unwell. Click here for the CDC's Heat Safety Tips.
  • We're Thinking Ahead for You - Volunteer shifts may start earlier or be shortened to help beat the heat. We'll always keep you updated if anything changes. Just make sure to check your email before heading out, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have a question.
  • Splash Zones Ahead! Looking for a cool down after your shift? From spraygrounds to shady trails, our parks offer plenty of ways to beat the heat this season. Explore splash-worthy destination open now through Labor Day! And don't forget about the RiverScape Cafe and/or the Fountain Snack Bar where you can pick up a cold treat to enjoy while enjoying the beautiful gardens and all the fun programming this park has scheduled for the season.
  • Summer Volunteer Care Campaign - Volunteer Services will be delivering ice cold fruit popsicles to your parks the coming weeks to help you stay cool while volunteering during our annual summer volunteer care campaign.

Thank you for all you do, and don't forget to take care of yourself out there, and each other. Here's to a fun and safe summer of service!
