Conservation & Sustainability Tip:

Gardening for Global Good

Gardening, especially organic gardening, can promote sustainability by reducing negative environmental impacts. Gardening can reduce chemical use, help conserve water and energy, improve soil health, and support biodiversity. Gardening can also help mitigate climate change by increasing carbon storage in soil and plants. Learn more about how gardening supports our global good below:

-Organic gardening methods minimize pollutants by reducing the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides which pollute our air, water, and soil. Gardening supports biodiversity by creating habitats for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife.
-Growing your own food reduces reliance on commercially grown produce minimizing waste from transportation, over-packaging, and other harmful commercial activities.
-Using compost and cover crops improves soil fertility and structure allowing the soil to retain water and nutrients more effectively.
-Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere helping to reduce global warming.
-Sustainable practices like no-till gardening and using cover crops can increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil, further helping to mitigate climate change.
